Choosing a Color Palette for Your Tablescape
When I start planning my tablescape, the first thing I focus on is the color palette. It sets the foundation for all the other elements on the table and ties the entire look together. Since I decorate for Christmas in early November, I wanted a color palette that would seamlessly blend with my holiday decor while still capturing the essence of Thanksgiving.
For my Thanksgiving tablescape this year, I wanted to start with a neutral color palette inspired by what I see outside in nature. These warm, muted tones help achieve the cozy ambiance I wanted. I decided to incorporate taupe, green, and a deep orange color.
Layering the Table: The Foundation
When you start putting your tablescape together, you’ll need to decide on your base-layer linens. You can choose from different tablecloths and table runners or even layer them. A solid tablecloth in a neutral shade gives you a clean slate to work on, and a textured runner adds warmth to your table.
For my Thanksgiving tablescape, I went with a white tablecloth and layered a taupe gauze table runner. This anchored my centerpiece and added in additonal warmth to my tablescape.
Incorporating Natural Elements
Adding natural elements to your tablescape instantly brings warmth and charm, creating a fresh, organic feel that ties everything together. I focused on two key elements for this design: eucalyptus leaves and dried orange slices.
The eucalyptus branches served as the centerpiece’s foundation, draped along the length of the table to create a lush, natural layer. I added dried orange slices throughout the greenery. These slices added a pop of warm, earthy tones and created a lovely contrast against the cool green eucalyptus. Their circular shape broke up the linear arrangement of the branches, drawing the eye naturally across the table.
Eucalyptus and dried oranges are easily accessible but add so much character to the table.
Adding the Ambience with Candles
Candles in a tablescape are a must! They bring warmth and a hint of intimacy to the table. I wanted to play up the cozy ambiance and added multiple candles. I used the same off white taper candles but gave the tablescape visual interest with different candle holder heights. I also added 2 hurricane glass holders for candles to create more dimension. Layering all of the different candles helped the tablescape look completed but keeping the same color candle kept it cohesive.
I love how, as the night progresses, the candles start to melt and create beautiful organic shapes of dripping wax. The hurricane glasses also reflect the flames, creating such a beautiful look!
Place Settings: A Balance of Simplicity and Elegance
Your place settings are where functionality meets style, and they’re key to tying your tablescape together. For this design, I opted for a balance of simplicity and elegance by combining clean, classic elements with subtle metallic accents.
I started with gold chargers for the place settings of my Thanksgiving tablescape. Then, I layered my extra white dinnerware. I love to keep extra white dinnerware on hand because it always goes with different tablescapes. If you have themed dinnerware, this is a great time to add it!
If I had gold flatware, I would definitely add that to my tablescape, because the warmth from the gold would tie into the table. Silver looks just fine, as well.
The tablescape is sophisticated, just enough for the look I was going for.
Finishing Touches: Small Details Make a Big Impact
I finished off the Thanksgiving tablescape with small bud vases filled with muted orange mums. You could add any number of things, from small pumpkins and gourds to pine cones or other florals, that complement your tablescape.
This last element polishes your table and pulls everything together. To add more dimension, add varying sizes and textures. Be selective with the number of items added.
