The Best Summer Dessert: Homemade Ice Cream & Peach Pie

Today on the blog, I’m going to share with you my Papa Da’s famous home made ice cream recipe and my favorite peach pie! Talk about a combination made in heaven!

A walk down memory lane

It’s almost 90 degrees here in Alabama today and summer is just getting started. Personally, I could eat ice cream any day of the week but it’s even better on a hot afternoon after spending time outside with my family. I called my Mom this morning so I could get the official story about Papa Da’s ice cream. When he and my Grandma got married, they received an ice cream maker as a wedding gift. Somewhere along the way he found this recipe and adapted it to their liking. He has been making this exact recipe for over 50 years and pretty much everyone who knows him brags about how amazing his ice cream is. I’m not kidding, it truly is THAT GOOD!

I grew up making this with Papa Da every time we got to see each other. His ice cream maker was the old school kind where you had to use rock salt and turn the freezer compartment by hand. Talk about a work out! It’s such a sweet memory I have of my childhood with him that I treasure more than he knows!

I know y’all are here for the recipe so I will cut straight to the chase! I asked my Hubby for an ice cream maker machine for Mother’s Day, and it has definitely paid for itself already! You can make so many things with it, frozen drinks, slushies, ice cream, frozen yogurt, and more! HERE is the one I got! I’m telling you, it’s worth the investment if you love to make things home made 😉

Papa Da’s Famous Ice Cream Recipe

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4c sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • dash of salt
  • 2c heavy cream
  • 2c whole milk

In a mixer or in a bowl with a hand mixer, beat 2 eggs and slowly add sugar until you get a fluffy mixture. Add in vanilla and salt and mix well. Pour in heavy cream and milk. Transfer to ice cream maker and follow directions to make ice cream.

See! How stinking easy is that, and you get the BEST tasting ice cream. It beats Blue Bell, and that is one of my favorites. The ice cream mixer I bought from Amazon takes about 30 minutes to have ice cream and then we transfer to a bowl and pop it in the freezer for a few hours before we enjoy. If you try this recipe, please let me know how much you love it!!

Mrs. Kay’s Peach Pie

At one of our favorite local farmer’s markets, they had some sheets of paper next to the peaches with some recipes on them, so I’m not entirely sure who Mrs. Kay is, but her peach pie is amazing! I’ve made this pie a handful of times and each time it’s just as good.

Peaches are one of our favorite fruits in the summer, and Alabama also has some of the best! Our local markets sell Chilton County Peaches, and if you’re ever driving on I-65 and pass through Chilton County, you will see the giant peach from the interstate!

Mrs. Kay’s Peach Pie Recipe

  • 5c sliced and peaches
  • 1 unbaked pie shell
  • 1/3c melted butter
  • 1c sugar
  • 1/3c flour
  • 1 egg

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add sliced peaches to pie shell. Mix melted butter, sugar, flour, and egg in a separate bowl and then cover peaches with mixture. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Y’all. SO. GOOD. and easy! I personally toss my peaches in the mixture in my pie shell, but either way it comes out delicious every time. Sometimes when I have some extra pie dough I will go in and add the extra detail on the crust on top, but even if you don’t do that, it’s still amazing.

Let your pie cool for a few minutes and then serve it up and add a big ole scoop of your homemade ice cream on top!

Thanks so much for reading and I hope y’all enjoyed this post and give this recipe a try. Next week I will be sharing my top tips on how to keep a tidy home.
