A Soft & Simple Patriotic DIY for Your Cottage-Style Home

This is the perfect DIY if you’re looking for an easy way to upcycle a cheap frame, or even thrifted frames! As long as they have the mat inside, they will work. You can use any fabric you like, and you can even tailor this to work for year-round use or for any room. The options are endless!

Supplies

Picture frame with mat
Fabric
Fabric Scissors
Mod Podge
Paintbrush
Small garden Flag or Photo

Directions

Take your frame apart, and place the mat on top of your fabric. I like to cut my fabric to be about 1/2 inch bigger than my matting. After cutting the fabric, go ahead and iron the fabric. This is a personal preference, but I think it always looks better when the fabric is ironed.

Next, add a small line of Mod Podge with a paintbrush to the edge of two sides. I like to work from side to side to ensure that the fabric is taut. Cut the fabric at a 45-degree angle before folding it over to the Mod Podge.

Once that is complete, add Mod Podge to the other edges and fold the fabric over to secure. I like to fold my corners in and add more Mod Podge to secure them.

Next, notch a small hole in the center of the fabric and cut straight lines towards the inside corners; this way, you can wrap the fabric around to the back. Thus, enveloping the frame matting with your fabric.

Add more Mod Podge to secure these pieces, and trim any extra fabric.

Next, add the matting to the frame, then place your small flag in the center. Add your back fabric if needed. I had a little extra room behind my flag, and I didn’t want to see the cardboard backing of the frame.
