How to: Easy DIY Banquette Seating

Banquettes are such a functional option to add to your home. You can maximize space, seat more people, cozy your home with upholstery, and even add storage space underneath!

We have a breakfast nook beside our kitchen, where we recently added a built-in dry bar, and we wanted to situate our table in the opposite corner. We built this banquette to maximize that space and create an even cozier feel.

What You’ll Need

Supplies:

  • 2″ x 4″ x 8″ wood boards
  • 2.5″ interior wood screws
  • 3/4″ plywood
  • primed 1″ x 3″ wood boards
  • .5″ decorative trim
  • wood filler
  • caulk
  • paint

DIY Banquette Seating: The Build

This banquette is a project a DIY beginner can do! The hardest part will be determining your measurements.

We knew we wanted the height of our banquette to be 18″ from the floor, so we accounted for the 3/4″ plywood top, which told us that our frame height needed to be 17.25″. The same thing applies to your depth and length. However, don’t forget that you will add extra trim pieces to the sides that must be accounted for in your measurements.

Take your time to figure out your measurements. This will save you time and money down the road!

Don’t miss anything!

You got it! Check your email for your downloads 🙂

DIY Banquette Seating: Building the Frame

We used 2″ x 4″ boards to frame out the rough dimension of the banquette. We added multiple horizontal and vertical supports to strengthen and prevent sagging and warping.

DIY Banquette Seating: Plywood Wrap

We used 3/4″ plywood to wrap the entire frame. We secured it with wood glue brad nails and a few counter-sunk screws for the top piece.

TIP: make sure your top piece is flush with the side walls; this way, you don’t have any unsightly plywood edges exposed. This will be covered with the trim pieces.

DIY Banquette Seating: Finishing Trim

This is where your build will come to life! Adding trim is my favorite part because a project goes from just some wood to a beautiful home addition.

We used primed 1 x 3 boards, starting with the horizontal pieces and then adding the vertical ones.

We used this small detail molding inside each “box” we created with the 1 x 3 boards. This elevated the build SO much!

We finished the build by adding some base cap molding to tie it into the baseboards in our house.

DIY Banquette Seating: Filler, Caulk, and Paint

Next, we filled in any nail and screw holes with wood filler. Once that was dry, we sanded it smooth and used paintable caulk to make everything seamless.

We painted the banquette with Sherwin Williams Emerald Trim paint in Accessible Beige at 90%. We used This color on our dry bar build in the same room, so I wanted them to match.

DIY Banquette Seating: Final Result

This DIY banquette added so much to our space.

If you build your own, tag me and share it! I hope this post gave you the inspiration to tackle this project and that you feel ready to build your DIY banquette.

Thank you, as always, for reading along.

10 Affordable Ways to Add Charm to a Builder-Grade Home

You know that house you walk into and instantly feel like you don’t want to leave? I want everyone who walks through my front door to experience that. I have been on a mission to add charm to my home and thought some things I have implemented would help you too!

1: Wall Treatments

Here are five different wall treatments that you will LOVE!

Wall Treatment: Picture Frame Molding

Adding picture frame molding gives your home a traditional feel. Add it around your home to bring a luxury feeling.

Wall Treatment: Board and Batten

Board and batten is a classic way to add charm to your home. It is perfect for long hallways or even entryways!

Wall Treatment: Shiplap

Shiplap might have a rustic or farmhouse reputation, but it is still a beautiful option for your home. You can hang shiplap vertically to give it a more modern look!

Wall Treatment: Brick

These faux brick panels can be the perfect project to give your home some charm! Nothing says charm like some brick with a German schmear finish!

Wall Treatment: Wallpaper

Wallpaper is coming back in style, and I am here for it! There are a few different application options that are on the market, as well as options for designs. The possibility is endless with wallpaper.

2: Updated Lighting

Switching out light fixtures or adding in new ones is an inexpensive way to change your home’s feel completely. Let’s face it; the builder-grade lights are usually boring and lack style.

Layered Lighting: Wall Sconces

Wall sconces are gorgeous and can be used in different applications. You can use 2 on either side of a mirror in a bathroom or add them in hallways or bedrooms to add even more charm.

Pendant Lighting

There are so many beautiful options for pendant lighting these days. You truly cannot go wrong!

Lamps

I love adding lamps anywhere I can because it gives your home a cozy feeling. Layered lighting is a key element in designer homes.

3: Window Treatments

Roman Shades or Woven Shades

Roman shades give your privacy without sacrificing style.

Curtains or Drapes

I love to add curtains to every window because it gives them such a statement and dresses them up.

Cafe Curtains

Some may say these are outdated, but I think they can be absolutely beautiful when done correctly in the right space. A kitchen window, built-in breakfast nook, or bathroom are perfect!

4: Ceiling Medallions

This may be controversial, but I think ceiling medallions are stunning. You could add them to any light fixture, but I recommend adding them to a statement fixture, such as a dining room or living room. This way, it makes a bigger impact.

5: Switch up the Doors

Switching up the doors in your home can add a big bang for your buck!

Paint a Contrasting Color

Painting your doors is a way to add a pop of color and break up the monotony of all-white doors and trim.

Replace with reclaimed doors

If you can get your hands on a reclaimed door, this would be the perfect way to add charm to a pantry or laundry room space.

6: Built Ins

Houses that are filled with charm usually have built-ins throughout. Anywhere you can create small nooks and spaces is a great way to add charm to your home.

Breakfast Nook

Adding a banquet seating area to a breakfast space is becoming increasingly popular!

Reading Nook

A reading nook in front of windows is another great way to add charm to your home!

Bookshelves

You can add these anywhere! Small hallway voids, bedrooms, and office spaces are all great rooms to add built-in bookshelves.

7: Add Larger Trim

Most builder-grade homes come with the typical trim around the house, but it is not as grand as an older home would be. Switching out your trim or adding more trim is a cost-effective way to make an impact.

Crown Molding

Large crown molding is something that many older homes have and adds so much charm to a space. Add it everywhere if you can!

Door and Window Trim

Most builder-grade homes have basic door and window trim, but adding more to your home definitely makes each door and window feel like a statement.

Baseboards

The taller the baseboard, the closer to heaven, right?

8: Update Mirrors

Swithcing out builder grade mirrors truly makes such a difference in your home! You can find affordable yet beautiful mirrors at Lowe’s, HOme depot, Target, Wayfair, and I love the selection Kirklands offers! for under $125 per mirror you can change the entire feel of a space.

9: Add a Fireplace

A fireplace adds instant coziness. With a few power tools (or a contractor!), you can create a beautiful space in your home.

10: Don’t Forget the Ceiling

The ceiling, AKA: the fifth wall, is a spot that is often overlooked.

Adding wallpaper, paneling, or painting your ceiling is another perfect way to add charm to your home.

I added a beadboard panel to the ceiling in my powder room, which completely transformed the space!

How to: DIY Range Hood Cover

You have come to the right place to elevate your kitchen to the next level. I am sharing all about our DIY range hood cover.

This project covered an eyesore from our builder and gave our kitchen a custom look for under $150!

PIN FOR LATER

How to: DIY Range Hood Cover

Our builder made a slight error, and the pipe for our kitchen vent was off-center by about 5 inches. To “cover it up,” they built a soffit. It was horrible, but I knew we had plans to do something covering the stainless steel hood anyways, so we let it slide.

We thought this project would be more complicated than it was, and I wish we had done it earlier!

After searching for inspiration, we had an idea of what we wanted the end product to look like, and we got to work taking measurements of the range vent.

Once we took some measurements, it was easy to figure out how to assemble the range hood cover.

Tools

  • miter saw
  • track saw
  • drill
  • parallel clamps
  • 4′ framing square

Supplies

  • 1/2″ plywood
  • brad nails
  • wood glue
  • joint compound
  • caulk
  • primer
  • Roman clay
  • 3″ wood screws

Building

Robby drew the side frame on plywood using a speed square and straight edge.

We clamped both side pieces together to cut them out with the track saw so that they would be the same.

Next, we cut out the bottom face portion of the range hood cover. We attached everything using wood glue and brad nails.

We used scrap plywood, so we had a few seams to fix at the end, but we cut two more pieces to complete the face of the range hood cover.

Finishing

We had to fill one of the seams with caulk because we wanted a slight angle on the front and did not cut the boards at an angle. We used joint compound to fill nail holes, plywood edges, and seams.

Once the joint compound was dry, we sanded everything smooth, and I started on a primer layer to seal the wood. I stopped halfway through and just moved on to the Roman clay application.

I used the same Roman clay as I did on our fireplace, which you can check out here!

Using a putty knife, I worked the product onto the cover.

After two coats of Roman clay, we attached the white oak trim to the front and sides.

We used wood glue, clamps, and brad nails to make everything perfect!

Once the trim was ready to move, we installed the cover over our existing vent.

Robby countersunk four screws into the side of the vent cover into the 2×4 frame. We filled the screw holes and touched up any spots that needed it. Then it was time to clean up the kitchen and enjoy the new look!

Design Reveal: Modern Traditional Dining Room

Moving into a brand-new home can be exciting and daunting at the same time. Most of the time, new builder-grade homes lack character. I wanted to start somewhere that would impact how our home felt, so I designed our dining room! Deciding where to start can be a challenge.

The before

It honestly did not get more builder-grade than this. Basic framed-out windows and a cheap light fixture were all we got.

We moved our old furniture into the house and knew we wanted to replace everything. These were hand-me-down chairs mixed with an old pine table we had previously built, and it didn’t hold up well.

Adding character with trim-work

The first place we started working on was the accent wall with picture frame molding. I have a whole blog post you can check out HERE to read how to achieve this look step by step.

The tray ceiling already had crown molding, and we were able to source the exact one to add to the rest of the dining room. Crown molding is such a game-changer! It instantly upgrades a space.

Once the wall was complete, we framed out the windows. Comparing the before and after, you cannot deny that this makes the windows look complete. I plan to frame out all of the windows in our home slowly!

Furniture

My husband, Robby, and I built our dining table out of hard maple. We finished the table with Minwax Special Walnut and Triple Thick Polyurethane. We purchased THESE legs from Amazon, and they matched perfectly.

We also built the sideboard after seeing a similar one for over $2,000 online! That is out of my budget, so we made it, and it came out perfectly!

Both styles of chairs came from Target, and I am thrilled with their quality and comfort.

Three Affordable Ways to Refresh Your Home

1. Update Lighting

Whether you want to switch out a lamp or an entire light fixture, I have some affordable ways to do this to share with you.

I love checking out my local thrift shops for lamps – bases, and shades! I am not afraid to get something that needs some texture and paint to update it.

Amazon also has some amazing affordable light fixture options!

If you have pendant lights, you want to switch up; you can purchase light pendant shades.

2. Add Real Greenery

I genuinely believe that greenery completely changes the feel of your home.

From a fresh vase of flowers to a beautiful house plant, adding natural greenery elevates your home. Next time you are at the grocery store, grab a small arrangement of flowers and see how it changes the way your home feels!

Adding in natural plants and greenery gives your space new life. They brighten the room and, even better – purify the air!

3. Add New Throw Pillows

Another affordable way to refresh your home is to switch out your throw pillows. I love to find inexpensive pillows at Target, Home Goods, and TJ Maxx. Switching out your pillows will give your couch and living room a fresh look!

If you don’t want to store a bunch of pillows you aren’t using, I recommend buying pillow covers. This is an easy thing to swap out and store when you aren’t using them. Plus, you can wash them! Even better in my book!

Three Affordable Ways to Refresh Your Home

  1. Update lighting
  2. Add real greenery
  3. Add new throw pillows

Creating a beautiful home takes time. If you are ever feeling discouraged when looking at social media or Pinterest, let me assure you that all photos are staged. Beautiful homes don’t happen overnight; if they do, they were done for thousands of dollars. I’m speaking for myself too, when I say that most families cannot afford that.

There is something special about a thoughtfully curated home. Making do with what you have while you figure out what you genuinely want is a skill.

I hope these three affordable ways to refresh your home inspired you today.

My Favorite way to Find FREE Printable Art

Let me tell you a little secret: most Etsy shops and major retailers are selling these public domain images. I’m going to show you my favorite way to find them for free!

Having beautiful art in our homes and lives is such an underrated luxury. The process of finding the perfect piece sometimes takes a while but is well worth it in the long run.

My Favorite way to Find FREE Printable Art

Have you ever heard of Public Domain art? If you haven’t, I will introduce you to your new BFF! This is one of my favorite designer secrets. I can furnish homes with beautiful art that I could get for free! Minus the printing cost, of course. Which is pennies on the dollar compared to the value art brings to your home.

Public Domain art means that there are no intellectual property laws on the art. Most art ends up in the Public Domain due to old age, which is fantastic for those who want beautiful art pieces in their homes but don’t have the budget for the real deal.

If you don’t feel like searching for art, feel free to claim a copy of my curated collection of digital art below! I will send you my personal digital collection straight to your email. You can download and print as you please!

Where to Look

There are different online databases that you can access. Some of my favorites are:

What to search for

Most of the time, I like to get on Etsy and see what art is trending. This gives me an idea of an artist to search for or the name of a piece. Only some sources will have what you are looking for, so you might have to explore a few different places before you find them.

Sometimes I will use Google Lens to find the piece I am looking for. This has been a great help to me!

Some good keywords to search for are landscape, beach, ocean, florals, flower, tree, and home.

This process does take time and can be frustrating at times, but stick with it and you will find something you love.

Where to print

I love to use Staples to print! I will upload the image and have them print it as a poster. This is the most economical way!

However, using Staples or Walgreens Photo will come with glossy paper. If you prefer a matte image, I recommend using Mpix.

Examples

My favorites

Here are some of the pieces I was drawn to when I was searching for my own home!

Henri Gervex | The Beach at Trouville

Carlos de Haes | Villerville Beach

Constant Troyon | Lanscape

Still Life with Flowers

James Valentine Jelley | The Lily Garden

Edward Mitchell Bannister | Swale Land

Finding beautiful art for your home takes time and digging online, but it is well worth it! I love to peruse thrift stores for vintage frames to put my art in. This is an affordable way to fill your home with art that you love!

Rugs 101: How to find the perfect rug!

Rugs are an essential part of your space, but they often are an afterthought. I will share how to find the perfect rug and a roundup of my favorites!

*Disclosure: I only recommend products I would use myself and all opinions expressed here are my own. This post may contain affiliate links that at no additional cost to you, I may earn a small commission. Read full privacy policy here.

Rugs 101: How to find the perfect rug!

Rugs are an element we can use to ground a space, invite warmth and texture, and create a more intimate feel. Use these tips to help you find the perfect rug!

What size do I need?

Deciding what size rug you need is the first step. This way you can narrow down your choices by size when shopping. If you know you need a larger size then you won’t waste your time looking at anything smaller.

I always recommend going as large as possible with rugs. If you have an open-concept room, then you might be looking at something as large as a 10×14. If your room is on the smaller side an 8×10 would probably fill your space perfectly

Living Room Rug Placement

You will want to decide how to anchor your furniture on a rug. A good rule of thumb is to have at least the front feet of all your furniture on the rug. If you find a rug you love but a bit too small for your living room furniture to sit on, layering rugs is always an option. We will dive into that later.

Again, having the most oversized rug possible makes your space feel grander.

Bedroom Rug Placement

In a bedroom, using a rug is a great way to add even more coziness to the space. The placement of a rug in a bedroom is slightly different from the placement in a living room area.

While you don’t want to line up the head of your bed with a side of the rug, you also don’t want to get out of bed in the morning and not have any rug to step onto.

Below are two examples of placing a rug in your bedroom. You can use the size and layout of your bedroom to determine which way you place your rug.

Dining Room Rug Placement

Dining rooms can be tricky. You want a rug large enough that when someone sits at the table, all four legs of the chair are still on the rug.

Creating cohesion with rugs in an open-concept area

The majority of homes these days have open-concept floor plans. Implementing rugs that work together but are different is critical. Think of this as a main character and supporting actors.

Decide which room you want the statement rug in and which will take the less flashy option. I prefer the statement rug in the living room. This way, the rug in the dining room can be the supporting actor since it will have a table and chairs on it anyways.

Rug Pairings I love

Here are some examples of rug pairings that I love. Use these as inspiration for your home!

Things to consider

Now that you know what size rug to get and an idea for placement, it’s time to consider the next 3 things.

Your family’s lifestyle

Do you have multiple children and pets? If so, you will want a rug that will stand the test of time. Something that will resist stains, be easily cleaned, and won’t snag. These things are inevitable in life but choosing a rug that will better stand to those elements is crucial. The rug fiber will be the ultimate factor in longevity.

rug fiber types
  • Wool – the most durable fiber, more expensive upfront but will last for years to come
  • Sisal- adds natural warmth and texture, would not recommend using it in a high moisture room
  • Polypropylene- stain resistant, doesn’t absorb water, and colors are vibrant
  • Polyester- won’t stand up to heavy long term traffic – will need to be replaced periodically, stain and fade resistant

Location

Does the space you want to put a rug in have a lot of moisture? If you plan to put a rug in a bathroom or laundry room, I suggest choosing something that will resist mildew.

If you plan to put a rug in a dining room area, you will want one that is stain resistant.

Do you need a rug pad?

Similarly, to consider your family’s lifestyle, deciding whether or not you need a rug pad is something to think about. If you have small children and your family spends time on the floor playing, investing in a quality rug pad is a good idea. You don’t necessarily need a rug pad under a runner in a hallway.

There are a few different options for rug pads. I opt for the beaded non-slip pads or the thicker felt pads. Beaded non-slip pads are perfect for runners if you prefer to have a rug pad. I recommend using them if you have genuine hardwood floors to protect them. My house has LVP flooring, and I use double-sided rug tape to keep my runners in place.

Your home’s color palette

Please remember that your home’s color palette is crucial when deciding on a rug. I will always recommend following the golden ratio in your home regarding color. You want your home to have 60% base color, 30% complimentary color, and 10% contrasting color.

I like to use rugs to bring in the 10% contrasting color. In my living room, my rug has deep reds and blues. When contrasted with the neutrals in my furniture and walls, it gives my living room life.

Layering Rugs

If you have found a rug that you love but is smaller than you need, layering rugs is always an option!

If you need to layer rugs, I like to use a jute or jute-like rug for the base layer. This gives great texture and does not compete with the rug on top.
